Play With the Puppy

Each handler must carry with them some form of “poop scoop” and all puppies must wear a collar and Identification tag complying with the law.

It is a legal requirement to clean up after your puppy in public areas and dispose of the bag in an appropriate bin.

It is a legal requirement to inscribe the name and the address of the owner on the collar or on a plate or disc attached to it.

it is a legal requirement for your puppy to be microchipped from 8 weeks old and for you to keep the personal details up to date.

The object of this exercise is to educate the owner on the basic principles of owning a puppy. This is a talk or open discussion covering all the basic topics related to owning a puppy, but must include the following:-

a) Cleanliness and identification

b) Recognition of basic health problems

c) Health protection for the puppy

d) Teething, chewing and daily routine

e) House training and separation anxiety

f) Socialisation with people and other dogs

The puppy should know its name when spoken and at least pay brief attention.

Play should be under the owner’s control and if it involves toys they should not be dangerous and should be readily given up by the puppy.

Socialisation

With a placid dog unknown to the puppy

The puppy will be carefully introduced on a lead to another suitable dog.

With an adult person unknown to the puppy

The puppy will be carefully introduced on a lead to a man or woman unfamiliar to the puppy.

With noise distraction

The puppy should not be unduly startled by normal day to day sounds.

Handling and Inspection

Prior to grooming, a puppy needs to allow handling of its body by its owner.

This exercise is of high importance for when a puppy needs to be seen by a vet.

Puppy Recall

From a couple of steps away a puppy should recall to their name, with high praise.

Basic Puppy Positions

Here, we learn the basic positions that form the basis of all obedience work. The stand, sit and down commands, these can be acheived with incentives and only need to be held briefly.

Walking in a Controlled Manner

A puppy will learn to walk and turn approx 20 paces in a controlled manner, this does not mean necessarily walking to heal.

Puppy "Stay"

The puppy "stay" is foundation for further "stay" training.

Puppies are instructed to "stay" in one place for 10 seconds, although they may change position.

Take Article Away

Teaching a puppy to give an article up is an important step, whether its a toy or something they've picked up in the street.

Here the puppy is given an article (not food) and then asked to relinquish it.

Food Manners

Puppies can be over excited when it comes to food so teaching them to be polite when accepting treats/food is vital.

The course will cover the following areas:
